How are we going to deal with one who infers a creator whenever he/she sees some kind of order, or with one who infers or explains everything in terms of biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics and the like…
Equations, whether organic, inorganic or physical chemistry, are only written expressions of observable patterns in nature or system. A scientist or researcher cannot infer on his own why such pattern exists. For example, ΔU = q + w, this law states that two processes, heat (q) and work (w) can lead to a change in the internal energy (ΔU) of a system. Since both heat and work can be measured and quantified, we say that change in energy of a system results in change of energy outside the system. In other words, energy cannot be created or destroyed. If heat flows into a system or the surroundings to do work on it, the internal energy increases and the sign of q or w is positive. On the other hand, heat flow out of the system or work done by the system will be at the expense of the internal energy, hence it will be negative.
Moreover the second Law of Thermodynamics states that in all energy exchanges, if no energy enters or leaves the system, the potential energy of the state will always be less than that of the initial state known as entropy. An automobile which run out of gas will not run again until refuel it. The flow of energy maintains order and life. A spring-driven watch will run until potential energy in the spring is transformed, and not again until energy is reapplied to the spring.The potential energy locked in carbohydrates is converted into kinetic energy so that entropy wins when organisms cease to take in energy and die.
This might sound too elaborate on ΔU = q + w and second law of thermodynamics, but if you are going to ask me why energy cannot be created nor destroyed, why can’t I make energy out of nothing or why heat flows from hotter to colder body and not the reverse and why will the organism cease to take in energy, would be a much more challenging task. The point is equations can only give information on what is already there, on what is observable.
If a person would want me to explain a phenomenon with scientific equation, I will try to do it to the best of my ability but prior to this, I will warn the person that science cannot explain everythingin the context of biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics alone. There are limitations of science that remains static until this time. I believe in individual discernment but as a science teacher I have faith that this judgement can be persuaded by someone who has the experience and honest motives to share knowledge.
It is my stand that therefore that the order inherent to matter is guided by immense power and knowledge, which I cannot explain further at this time. There are so many questions that need answer and there are limitations which are bound for exploration. Every person has a mind that can conceive ideas, which in itself quests for elucidation, if a discourse ends in vagueness at that certain time, then tomorrow is another day of expedition.
